5 Plants That Safely Deter Snakes

When we think about fostering a diverse environment—like the wildlife habitat created by the dead hedge fence line at the A-frame camping cabin in Kentucky—snakes are often one of the main creatures we’d prefer not to attract. Snakes do play an important role in maintaining ecological balance; however, we aim to discourage their presence near frequently used spaces to ensure comfort and safety for our guests.

At Trace Space KY, we respect and appreciate all wildlife, including snakes, but we prefer they stay in their natural woodland habitats, although we do live 'in' the woods. To help with this, we grow 5 plants that naturally deter snakes while also supporting our local ecosystem.

A top choice for keeping snakes at bay is lemongrass. This aromatic plant has a strong citronella fragrance that snakes dislike. By planting lemongrass around our property, we not only create a fresh and inviting atmosphere, but we also help to establish a natural barrier against unwanted slithering guests. Plus, lemongrass is a versatile herb that can elevate our culinary creations, from soups to teas and in making our salves.

Another great option is marigold. These bright flowers not only add color to our garden, but their scent can also deter snakes and other common pests. Marigolds contain natural compounds that repel mosquitoes and insects, making them a double win. By planting marigolds, we beautify our outdoor space with splashes of color while also enhancing our security against snake visits.

For a more herbaceous approach, we also plant spearmint and other mint varieties, such as lemon balm - a close relative to the mint. These plants have a sharp aroma that snakes find uninviting. They are perennials, hardy, and grow well in various conditions, and can also be used in numerous dishes, teas, and they all have wonderful health benefits. A double win!

While it’s important to deter snakes, we must also acknowledge their role in our ecosystem. For example, the black snake is a beneficial species that controls the populations of rodents and even other snakes, such as venomous species. They help keep mouse and mole numbers in check, contributing to a healthier overall environment.

At Trace Space KY, we choose to safely and effectively try to alleviate snake encounters while still supporting the ecosystem by simply planting the annuals: lemongrass and marigolds, and the perennials: spearmint, mint, and lemon balm. It's not always full proof so there is that possibility to see a snake, we are in the country, but we do what we can to safely deter them, and you can too in your own yard.
