As summer blooms in Kentucky, the landscape becomes a vibrant tapestry of colors and sounds at Trace Space KY. The warm weather draws people outdoors, booking our transforming a-frame camping cabin ready to enjoy the beauty of nature. However, this idyllic scene often comes with the unwelcome presence of mosquitoes. These small pests can turn a pleasant evening into a frustrating experience, and they can carry diseases that pose health risks. By focusing on a variety of plants that repel mosquitoes, we do our best to create a peaceful outdoor sanctuary for our guests.
Planting mosquito-repelling native plants can further enhance our landscape and the wildlife.

Effective Plants to Deter Mosquitoes
Adding mosquito-repelling plants to our yard and gardens are smart strategies for reducing annoying bites. Here are several excellent choices to consider:
Wild Bergamot: also known as bee balm. It has a strong minty, citrus-like scent that repels mosquitoes. Great for pollinators too. The leaves of wild bergamot are edible, raw or cooked. (Please do your own research and consult a doctor before consuming.)
Mountain Mint: Very aromatic, with a menthol scent mosquitoes dislike. Also attracts beneficial insects. Can be used in tea or cooking. (Mint jelly is tasty!)
American Beautyberry: A shrub with clusters of purple berries. The leaves contain compounds that have been shown to repel mosquitoes (like callicarpenal). The berries are edible but not as tasty as a blueberry or blackberry; the birds are attracted to the colorful berries, and the plant serves as an important source of sustenance for them during the fall and winter months.
Sweetgrass: A fragrant grass used traditionally for smudging. It emits coumarin, which has mosquito-repellent properties. Sweetgrass is suited for rain gardens and provides year-round colors. It enhances biodiversity by providing shelter and food for various wildlife species.
NON-NATIVE TO KY

Lavender: This fragrant plant not only beautifies the garden but also serves as a powerful natural mosquito repellent. Studies have shown that the scent of lavender can be up to 90% effective in keeping mosquitoes away.
Citronella: Widely recognized for its mosquito-repelling properties, citronella masks scents that attract mosquitoes, making it an essential plant for any summer garden.
Lemon Balm: It contains citronellal, a compound with a scent that mosquitoes dislike—similar to what’s found in citronella plants. It's best used crushed. Also wonderful in a tea or added to dishes.
Marigold: With their cheerful blooms, marigolds contain compounds that are effective against multiple insects, including mosquitoes. They can decrease mosquito presence in the garden by up to 70%.
Basil: This popular herb not only enhances summer salads but also releases natural oils that repel mosquitoes.
Lemongrass: Packed with citronella oil, lemongrass is a powerful deterrent that adds flavor to your meals while keeping mosquitoes at bay.
Rosemary: This culinary herb not only adds zest to grilled dishes but also emits strong scents that mosquitoes dislike.
Peppermint: The refreshing scent of peppermint acts as a natural insect repellent, creating a more enjoyable atmosphere. (suggested to keep in planter)
Climate Considerations
Kentucky's climate is changing. Warmer temperatures are contributing to swelling mosquito populations. A study by the CDC noted a 30% increase in mosquito-related diseases over the last decade in several states, including Kentucky. Thus, it is essential to take proactive measures to maintain clean and sustainable outdoor spaces.
A Lasting Approach to Summer Enjoyment
Summer in the Daniel Boone National Forest, Menifee County, Kentucky holds endless opportunities for outdoor exploration and enjoyment. At Trace Space KY we do our best in choosing native flora to provide a sustainable approach to landscaping. We have purposely planted mountain mint around the cabin so as guests brush past the leaves it will help to release the scent and naturally deter mosquitoes (and snakes). By planting mosquito-repellent plants like native bee balm and non-native lemon balm, we can naturally deter mosquitoes while also supporting pollinators and enhancing biodiversity. It’s an easy, low-maintenance solution that also supports pollinators and adds beauty to the space... happy gardening!
